Vaginal Discharge, also called Sweta Pradara in Ayurveda is a white vaginal discharge in women having a foul smell. It is a universal disease. It is an abnormal disease condition of the female reproductive organs. It may be thick and viscid and foul smelling if it is caused by some infection. In addition to infection, Vaginal Discharge is also caused due to some hormonal and metabolical disorders. Normally the quantity of vaginal secretions varies throughout the menstrual cycle, peaking at ovulation and also increasing when under emotional stress. These white discharges are also slightly sticky. It particularly affects the women as the female genitals are moist, sweaty and covered.
Vaginal Discharge is basically of two types, Physiological and Pathological. In physiological type Vaginal Discharge, the discharge happens due to excitement or other factors like nervousness. One need not be unduly worried over this. It is also found under the following conditions: seen in new born baby for a week due to maternal oestrogen, in girls during puberty due to hormonal changes and also at the time of ovulation in early pregnancy and during sexual excitement.
In the case of pathological Vaginal Discharge, the main causes are general ill health, under nutrition and a dysfunctional state in genital tract.
Causes:
Ayurveda considers Vaginal Discharge to be caused by the vitiation of the kapha dosha and occurs mainly among the weak and anemic women. It is also seen to be caused due to the inflammation of the womb following childbirth, displacement of the uterus or gonorrhea. And, among the young females, it can also be caused due to threadworms, as a result of general debility combined with lack of cleanliness or infections. It can also occur in young women during the menstrual periods due to the thickening of the mucus membrane in the reproductive organs. Infection may also occur during the delivery of the baby as there could be damage to the cervix among child bearing women right from the adolescence to the mid – forties.
Symptoms
The symptoms associated with Vaginal Discharge are that the discharge is white and the flow may stiffen the linen or leave back a trace of white powder or scales. Most often the discharge emanates from the uterine cavity or vagina. In catarrhal or idiopathic variety of Vaginal Discharge the discharge is mild and in liquid form. The discharge emanates from the uterus and from the uterine cavity. And, among certain women, Vaginal Discharge discharge occurs 8-10 days before the usual menses period and stops as soon as the menses appear but among other women, it may appear when menses are already over.
In addition to the above, certain other symptoms are also visible. These include lower abdominal pain, a feeling of pain during sexual intercourse, a feeling of backache and pain in the leg especially in the thigh and calf muscles, soreness and a burning sensation in the genital tract, frequent urge to pass urine but the discharge is of minimal quantity, appearance of black patches under the eye, a general feeling of tiredness due to loss of vital fluids as discharges, irritability and a lack of concentration in work due to consciousness of discharges and digestive disturbances like constipation, diarrhea and vomiting. The symptoms suggest that there is a direct relationship of this disease with a nervous temperament.

Diagnosis – The Ayurveda Way |
All treatments in Ayurveda are prescribed only after a careful diagnosis of the patient’s body constitution, family history, sex, age, stage of the disease etc. This will enable the patient to receive treatments that are specifically suited to his very needs. Ayurveda treatments will therefore vary from patient to patient.
The first consultation with an Ayurveda doctor, including the diagnosis will last for more than an hour. The basic step in the diagnosis will be to find the person’s body humor (Dosha) – Vata, Pita or Kapha, because it is the imbalance of these body humors that creates Vaginal Discharge
The dominance of dosha in a person is found by asking several questions on his behavior, food habits, sleeping patterns, age, height & weight, place of life, profession, health problems and medical reports etc. Ayurveda diagnosis comprises of clinical and laboratory tests also.
Pulse, tongue, nail, and eye examinations are important diagnosis methods used to reveal a person’s body humor and its imbalance. This will help the doctor in treating the disease
Pulse diagnosis in Ayurveda is not just counting the beats. It also reveals the health status of the entire body constitution, including the dosha imbalance and the health of the various body organs.
In tongue diagnosis, the doctor checks the general appearance, colour and coating of the tongue. In Ayurveda, as different areas of the tongue correspond to different organs of the body, the Ayurvedic practitioner can determine which organs of the body are out of balance by having a detailed tongue examination.
Nail examination is done to check the type, colour and shape of the person’s nail. Imbalances of doshas are easily detected on close examination.
In the eye diagnosis, the colour, size and even the shape of the eyes are important in determining the dosha dominance of a person. His mental status – nervousness, anxiety, confidence level etc – can also be learned through eye diagnosis.
A preliminary consultation with Ayurveda doctors online is also possible nowadays for guests worldwide.
