Vagbhata popularly known for his two treatises on Ayurveda was acknowledged as one of the all time greats in the Ayurveda system of medicine.
The two treatises on Ayurveda that Vagbhata composed, namely, “Ashtanga Samgraha” (summary of octopartite science) and “Ashtanga Hrudaya Samhita” (Heart of the essence of octopartite science) were considered master pieces in Ayurveda. These treatises are taught in Indian Universities even now. It was Vagbhata who taught that Ayurveda system of medicine had eight branches namely: Kaya (general medicine), Baala (pediatrics), Graha ( astrology), Urdwanga( above neck), Shalya(surgery), Dhamshtra(toxicology0 ,Jara ( longevity) and Vrusha (infertility). It was believed that Vagbhata spent a greater part of his life teaching in Kerala. Vagbhata was believed to have died in central Kerala. |
