Susruta was considered the father of all surgeries and is acknowledged as the greatest surgeon.

 He was the author of the renowned treatise “Susruta-Salya-Tantra”. This treatise, however, had been re-edited by Nagarjuna during the latter part of the 4th century B.C. He performed innumerable number of operations using novel methods. His book also mentioned a large number of surgical instruments. He made major innovations in the field of plastic surgery of the nose. Cataract operations, cesarean operations, operations on the abdomen and urinary stone removal operations were also the specialized areas where he was considered the undisputed master.
